Schuco is set to become the leading name in the UK Solar Energy market.

For many companies, solar energy is a new field. Not for Schuco. The parent company has already clocked up twenty years of experience in mainland Europe and the technology – although continually moving forward – is proven and effective, as thousands of satisfied customers will attest. Since 2005 – when Renewables was established as a separate division – Schuco UK has been drawing on this huge knowledge base and is now on course to achieve a similar mass-market success in the UK as in Germany.

When is first started, the primary brief of the Renewables Divison was modest: simply to ensure that Schuco solar thermal products and photovoltaic modules were accredited under government initiatives such as ‘Clear Skies’, which provided grants to encourage the take-up of alternative energies. It also worked hard to promote Schuco’s thermal offering to architects, local authorities, housing associations and public bodies such as universities.

As the renewable energies sector begain to grow, the Training Centre at Milton Keynes ran the first solar thermal training courses and in 2007 achieved BPEC accredited status. In 2008, the Centre reinforced the perception of Schuco UK as a market leader by introducing a new training course. Aimed at introducing technical concepts behind PV cells and explaining the practicalities of installing PV arrays, this was the fore-runner of the latest PV Logic-approved courses that the Centre is running today.

In the last two years, Schuco solar products and Schuco partners have won and been shortlisted for many awards in the renewables sector and Schuco UK is continuing to lead the field with exciting innovations such as thin-film photocoltaics.

The latter technology, is hugely exciting. Schuco’s parent company in Germany now has two plants dedicated to the production of thin-film modules in various formats. With capacity currently running at more than 150 megawatts per year, this is clear evidence of Schuco’s dominant role both as a major investor in, and a leading provider of solar
technology. The Energy2 concept of Saving Energy, Generating Energy which puzzled some industry commentators when it was launched, is now a reality.

Nevertheless, before becoming too self-congratulatory, Schuco were quick to admit that at least some of the success of the Renewables Division is due to government initiatives. For example, the introduction of the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) last year provided a huge boost to the solar energy industry in general and to Schuco UK in particular. Why? Because having already had experience of similar government initiatives in Europe, the company was in a position to understand and make the most of the opportunities it presented. So, during 2010, the Renewables Division responded to rapidly escalating demand by establishing the biggest sales and specification team in the UK. This included new Area Sales Managers,
Architectural Project Managers and technical support staff.
